The Approval of Sheep
The first three chapters of The Approval of Sheep, read by the author Karen Storey
‘A truly strong person does not need the approval of others any more than a lion needs the approval of sheep.’
— Vernon Howard
Ever since he heard he was an accident, Gordon has secretly believed he was never meant to be born. Now forty-two, he’s still struggling to escape the shadow of his high-achieving family.
But a glimmer of hope is on the horizon – a huge promotion within his hotel group is up for grabs, and he is sure that his time has come to make a mark on the world.
But then a run-in with the boss shatters his illusions. Not only did he not get promoted, he’s lost his job. His girlfriend swiftly follows.
With his dreams over, he’s devastated. But then he learns of an historic covenant that preserves the right for sheep to run through the company’s top London hotel. Desperate to avoid yet another failure, he decides to blackmail his former employers into giving him his job back.
Up in the hills of Bryn Nefyn, North Wales, live the descendants of the covenant owner. The elderly sheep farmer Alan and his aging hippy brother Rhys could use the money Gordon offers for their help. But along with their sassy New Yorker shepherdess Jenna, they tell Gordon he couldn’t possibly use this hundred-year-old clause today.
Or could he?
