Toby has lost her husband Ben and her direction in life. Left to bring up her little boy alone amidst her grief, she becomes obsessed with Ben’s never-realised desire to find the mythical Highland village of Call, said to be a place where lost things may be found. When she meets Jude, an author with a connection to the lost village, obsession turns to hope. But terrible things happen to people searching for the drowned village, and what you seek may not be what you find.

Ash has killed her mother and is on the run. Leaving behind school, friends, and the only life she has ever known. Close to giving up entirely, she stumbles across a mysterious house full of mirrors, inhabited by a man who claims he grew up with her mother. Ash is inducted into the secrets of the house, and learns that each mirror leads to the mind of a dreaming person. As she takes on the role of protecting the dreamers of the endless mirror halls, she uncovers her mother’s past, and begins to suspect that she isn’t being told everything about her new role.

Toby and Ash’s stories come together at the drowned village of Call, where what they find is not what they thought they were looking for.
